Honestly, I’m not sure how often I’d have the opportunity to post an update to a previously-seen trail post and/or their accompanying YouTube video.
The Problem
In the original post and video for the Coal and Coke Trail, I mentioned that there was a short segment a little less than a quarter-mile in length, alongside Overholt Drive in Scottdale, that had several deep ruts across the treadway, as well as several drain culvert grates directly in the treadway, that were very depressed. I mentioned that these posed dangers to cyclists who may not be aware of them beforehand.
Recently, I was rolling along the area by this trail portion not too long ago, and I noticed that the portion in question is now paved!
I’m not really sure whether it was East Huntington Township, the borough of Scottdale, or the Coal & Coke Trail Chapter who paved this little segment of the trail. However, it’s a welcome relief.
The Solution
Check out the video update below. The ruts are now gone! And while the culvert grates are still somewhat depressed, they’re now much closer to the trail surface itself, so if you have to ride over the culvert grates, it shouldn’t be as jarring to you or your bike as before the paving work. I’d guess there’s only so much they were able to do to make the trail surface level with them while still allowing for water runoff.
The paving makes this little portion of the trail much smoother and it’s now much safer for bikers and walkers, so that trail users can now stick to the trail itself, and avoid the roadside.
Thanks, Folks!
My thanks to whoever arranged and performed the paving work on this portion of the Coal & Coke Trail!
If you know who was behind this improvement, please let us know!
